Early French Immersion (Grade 1)

HCDSB currently offers an optional Early French Immersion Program beginning in Grade 1 at four school sites across our district.

About the Program

The Early French Immersion Program is an optional program with limited enrolment. The goal of the Early French Immersion Program is to develop functional proficiency in students through the provision of a significant amount of curriculum with French as the second language of instruction.

Students must be entering Grade 1 in their September start date, in order to be eligible to participate in the Board’s Early French Immersion Program.

Where is this Program Offered?

The Early French Immersion Program is offered regionally, and sites will change from time to time to address student enrolment and other considerations.

Registrations for the 2019-2020 School Year

The online registration process for the 2019-2020 school year took place earlier this year – in November, where in previous years it has taken place in February.

The online registration form was available for 2 weeks, beginning Monday, November 5, 2018 and ending on Monday, November 19, 2018. Please note that the online registration process is now closed.

About the Random Selection Process

Student enrolment in the (Grade 1) Early French Immersion Program is determined through a random selection (lottery) process.

Staff are currently in the process of validating registrations for the Early French Program. The lottery process will take place on Friday, November 23, 2018, and during that time, parents will be notified if their child was selected through the lottery for a spot in an Early French Immersion class, or notified if their child is on the waiting list.
